1. JOHN1 SHERROD, SR. was born Abt. 1630, and died Abt. 1706 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He married ----- PARNELL, daughter of THOMAS PARNELL.

Notes for JOHN SHERROD, SR.:
The family name at this point may have been "Sherrer", "Sherrard" or Shearer.

The Sherrod name is believed to have evolved from "Sherrer". It is believed that John Sr. was probably named John Sherrer, Sr. Early Sherrods seem to have been pretty casual about the spellings of their names. Harold Whitlock has a copy of a handwritten will for one of the early Sherrods (John Sherrod Sr., I think), and the family named is spelled differently at two places in the same will.

There is some evidence that John Sherrer Sr. was the son of George Shearer. According to "17th Century Isle of Wight County Virginia" by John Bennett Boddie, George Shearer came to Virginia from England in 1637. His headright was claimed by Thomas Hampton, May 19, 1637 when he secured a patent to 700 acres on the Nansemond River in the upper parish of New Norfolk.

In 1688 John Sherrer with John Wakefield received a land grant of 1050 acres. The grant was further described as "1050 acres on branches of the first SW of the Black Water, adjacent Cook's Lyne and their own land."

The will of John Sherrer, who was born about 1630, was made on January 23, 1705. He deeded to "Elizabeth Sherrer, the widow of John Sherrer, Jr., the plantation which she now lives on to fall to JohnSherrer my grandson." Executor: "My son, Alexander." John Sherrer, Sr. died in Isle of Wight County in 1706/7. He and is wife (daughter of Thomas Parnell) had six children: Alexander Shearer, SusannahShearer, Thomas Shearer, Robert Shearer (died 1727), John Shearer, Jr. (married Elizabeth), Elizabeth Shearer (who married John Dew, son of Colonel Thomas Dew, member and speaker of the House of Burgesses of the Colony of Virginia).

John Sherrer's will dated 23 January 1705 was recorded on 10 March 1706/7 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in Book I, page 480.

Birth year of John Sherrod Sr. is from his deposition, giving his age as 36 on 14 Dec 1665; Will and Deed Book I, Isle of Wight Co., VA, p. 543

Children of JOHN SHERROD, SR. and ----- PARNELL are:
2. i. ROBERT2 SHERROD, b. Isle of Wight Co., VA; d. Abt. 1727, Bertie Co., NC.
ii. ALEXANDER SHERROD, d. 1734, Tyrell Co., NC.
iii. SUSANNAH SHERROD.
iv. THOMAS SHERROD, d. Abt. 1731.
Notes for THOMAS SHERROD:
His will was probated 10 Jul 1731

v. ELIZABETH SHERROD, m. JOHN DEW.
3. vi. JOHN SHERROD, JR., b. Abt. 1673, Northampton County, North Carolina; d. 1703, Isle of Wight, Virginia.
