Grizzle, Wiley - Warren County, Brinkleys

According to my records (I'm also a decendent of William/Willie Grizzle) he died on or before May 5, 1823 in Warren County, Gerogia but I do not have an exact burial site. I have been trying to find out who Willie's parent were. I hit a deadend with him. He was born in NC around 1760 and served in the Rev. War with the 10 Reg. NC. afterwards he moved to Halifac co., NC and then to Warren County in the late 1790's. Not sure about where he was born or the exact date. I'm related to James Grizzle, his son by his second wife, Sarah Hadley, whom he married on April 27, 1797. she died after 1830 but not sure where. James moved to Lumkin co., GA. Willie first wife, W. Grizzle, died sometime before 1897 and I assume was buried in NC. I have no records on her. Wish I had an exact site to give you but that is all I have. Maybe some other decendent has more info.

I will try and answer your questins based on what I know. Wylie/Willie Grizzle was born in NC about 1760. He served in the Rev. War in the 10th Regiment NC under Col Abraham Shepard (Pierce Register). he owned land in Halifax co. NC after the War. First wife ( name unknown) died sometime before 1797. They had three children: Stephen, Thomas W. and Clement Grizzle. His second wife was from Halifaxco., NC. She was Sarah Hadley, born about 1774 in Halifax co. and they married on April 27, 1797 in Warren Co., GA. They had several children: Elizabeth, James, Son, Wylie, Sarah, and Joseph. James was my g-g-g-grandfather. James married Mary Ray on 12/28/1926 in Warren co., GA. They later moved to the Aurora district of Lumpkin Co., Georgia during the Gold Rush. His son, Thomas H. Grizzle was myg-g-grandfather, he married Sarah Haynes 1/3/1853 in Hall Co. GA. He died 5/20/1874 and she on 8-19-1923. They are buried in Price Creek Cemetery in Pickens co. Georgia. They had a son named John Benjamin Grizzle, born 28 May 1858 in Lumpkin Co., GA. He died on 5/21/1932. Buied in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Gilmer Co. GA (g-grandfather). He had a son named John Rufus Grizzle, my grandfather who was born on March 7, 1880 in Lumpkin co., GA and died on January 8, 1962. Buried in Arbor Hill Cemetery in Cherokee Co., Georgia. I have heard several times that there was some cherokee indian blood in the family tree but I have never been able to confirm. seems a lot of Wylie's off spring stayed around Warren Co. Georgia. Fromtime to time I hear from them. Sorry, I have no real information on Clement Grizzle but would appreciate any info that you have. My side of the family either followed the Gold Rush in Dahlonega or was involved with the Cherokee Land Lottery in the 1830's. They seem to have stayed around Lumpkin co. Ga until the 1880's and then moved west. There are a lot of Grizzle's in Lumpkin Co. GA. You might want to go to Genealogy.com and look in the Grizzle family forum. I' ve found a good bit of info from post I have made there. If you have any additional information on Wylie I would appricate it. I have hit a brick wall with him. No info on his parents or where they came from.

was googling my gggg grandad's name when I found your message on Ancestory. I have an article that was found in the Collection of Recollections of Bullock County (AL) History. It was written by Jose Mae Griswold - Hundley. It goes as follows.

"Wiley Griswold direct ancestor of Bullock County Griswolds, had moved wouth with the Continental Army, Bacot's Company in 1782, and had settled down in Halifax County, North Carolina, where he died in about 1825. His son, Stephen Griswold, who was born about 1782 in Halifax County, NC later lived in South Carolina and was married on May 27, 1810 to Elizabeth Harrison, in Warren Co, Georgia. He moved into Macon County Alabama in the late 1830's.

John Jeptha Griswold, youngest son of Stephen was born January 8, 1922 near what is now Rome, Georgia. He moved with his parents to Macon, Alabama. He worked on their plantation at Indian Creek and served as overseer on teh large plantation of his uncle Kinchen Griswold in Macon Co. Kinchen Griswold built a cotton gin near the springs and encouraged naming the place Union Springs. He nad his brother Martin, sold their property in Alabama and returned to Georgia but their nephew remained in Alabama and later owned a plantation at Sardis, China Grove, Old Union and Mt. Hillard."

It is believed through the writings of Elizabeth Griswold Black..a decendent of John Jeptha Griswold that Kinchen Grizzle changed the name from Grizzle to Griswold along about the time of the Civil War. Why is unknown although Mrs. Black suggests that it may have been to impress promenent Griswolds back in Georgia.

My line is Wiley, Stephen, Wiley, Wilson. All of Macon/ Bullock Co. Alabama

This may be old news by this time. But if not then I hope it helps.

Sincerely,

A. Griswold

Early census records of Halifax Co., NC indicate that Wiley and his wife had one daughter born by 1786, and three sons born between then and 1790. It is possible that this oldest daughter could have married Thomas GIBSON, explaining why he, and not one of Wiley's sons, was the administrator of Wiley's estate.
Papers concerning the estate of Wiley "GRIZZLE" were photocopied by Sidney A. DEWBERRY in the courthouse at Warrenton (Warren Co.), GA. Among the expenses paid out by Thomas GIBSON as Wiley's administrator were these:

1823, 17 March: postage on letters to & from Sheriff of Morgan Co.

1823, June: postage on a letter to J. BEALL, Morgan Co., to attend and direcct a Suit

I believe these records tell us that Wiley GRIZZLE's heirs included at least the following: sons Stephen, Thomas W., and Clement; widow Sarah; daughter Elizabeth, son James, and minor children Wiley,Sarah, and Joseph (at least the last three, and probably the last five, were Wiley's children by Sarah).

"Wiley Griswold, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, probably moved south with the Continental Army, Bacot's Company, in 1782. He setteled down in Halifax County, North Carolina where in 1785 he bought land and became a substantial citizen. In 1792, however, he sold all his land and moved to Warren County, Georgia. In 1797, he married his second wife Sarah Hadley. Sarah survived him when he died in 1823 in Warren County, Georgia."

James Drake's ancestry and date/place of birth is one of those great debate topics in genealogy; or at least in Drake genealogy. I am satisfied (at this point at least) that he is the son of John Drake and Sarah Bryant of Bertie Co., NC. This John Drake in his will names his son James who is not of age (21) and his wife Sarah and father-in-law James Bryant. A James Drake later sells land that belonged to this John Drake which connects the James Drake selling the land to John Drake. Jo White Linn makes a very good argument with proofs for this James Drake son of John & Sarah in her book Drake-Arrington (etc.) Having followed up with my own research, I agree with this reasoning. Perhaps future research will inconvertibly prove this right or wrong. Or perhaps we James Drake descendants will just have to agree to disagree. This Drake site has a very well done paper The Origin of the Drake Family of Isle of Wight County, Virginia by Charles Drake researches the ancestry of the Drakes of VA, including John and son James.

Place of birth and parents aside, the date of birth is still unsupported except as before the death of his father. John Drake wrote his will January 5, 1728, certified May Court 1729. James is identified in the will as not yet 21 years of age. James could be born anytime between 1706 and 1727. Ms. Linn gives his birthdate as August 5, 1725. Though normally quite meticulous about citing sources, she does not do so in this case. There could be a baptismal record somewhere. Some say that James Drake is buried at Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Henrico Co.,VA. Barb Marshall shared a findfrom Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots listing: DRAKE, James Old St John's Church Cemetery Richmond VA However, I have not been able to confirm either as his burial place.

Another interesting bit of well-known and accepted "fact" is that his first marriage was to Sophia Valentine. While descendant naming supports a Sophia Valentine, I have not yet found a specific source. It is supported that the James Drake who married widow Hartwell Davis (thought by most to have been Hodges) had a previous family. Hartwell's will supports her having only two children by James and a previously family by (Thomas) Davis.
